A Turing Test is a procedure designed to determine whether a machine can convincingly imitate a human being. The term originates with the English mathematician Alan Turing (1912–1954), who worked on artificial intelligence in the early 1950s.
The 'Turing Tests' were written as preliminary studies for my opera 'Turing', which explores the life and thought world of Alan Turing. Like the opera, the 'Turing Tests' address the question of the mechanical versus the living elements in music—how much mechanism exists within the living, and how much life resides within the machine.
