My Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations) were commissioned by Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie for a concert in the 'Neue Lausitzer Landpartie' series, themed around the mountain spirit Rübezahl. The piece is a breathless sequence of very short variations—a madcap collection of snapshots, few of them longer than 20 seconds. In doing so, I have musically become a sort of Rübezahl myself, for the music behaves in an extremely capricious manner and is constantly transforming. As is often the case in my work, a wide variety of ghosts from the past and present haunt this piece.
